What is coupon trading?

Trading coupons online is a process that helps you to multiply your savings when shopping. Trading your coupons with other coupon users over the Internet is very simple and can be extremely profitable. If you need a discount coupon for baby formula, for example, but cannot find it in your Sunday paper, all you have to do is visit one of the many online resources where you can turn the coupons you have but don’t need into coupons that you do need.

Have you ever watched, in awe, as the person ahead of you in line at the cashier deftly whisked out the appropriate coupons to buy a week’s worth of groceries for a fraction of the price? How was this person so well prepared and where did he / she get all the right coupons for the items they needed? Trading coupons is the answer.

While people have been trading coupons for years, doing so over the Internet is a recent (and increasingly popular) development. To start trading coupons, follow the steps below:

* Actively start to collect different kinds of coupons. Or, if you have a drawer full of unused coupons, now is the time to put them to good use. Even if you do not have children, do not discard baby item and diaper coupons, for example.

* Set aside the coupons you know you will use.

* Organize the coupons you do not need into categories (baby items, food, household supplies …). You will need them to trade for coupons on items and products your family needs.

* Prepare a list the types of coupons you use and need the most (grocery store coupons, personal care item coupons, pet care coupons etc)

How do online coupon trading networks and forums work?

There are many online coupon trading boards or forums. Most are free, but a few charge a small membership fee. You may only trade coupons for coupons on these forums. You may not sell your coupons. Some online coupon trading sites divide available coupons by product categories, stores or the locations where the coupons are valid. Below are some guidelines on how to participate in coupon trading networks.

* Search coupon trading forums and networks on the Internet. Frugal Village and Coupon Forum are two of the more popular trading websites, but there many more. Read the website’s rules and FAQ before you create your account.

* Do not enter your address or phone number. All you need to enter in order to participate is your first name, e-mail address and zip code (optional).

* Offer (post) some of the coupons you have and do not need. Provide all details of the coupons you are offering to trade (exact discount, brand name, expiration date, whether it is specific to particular retailers etc)

* Search online databases to know what coupons other people are willing to trade.

* At this point, you could simply wait and see what trade offers will come your way, or you could list the coupons (bread, toothpaste, pet food …) you would like in return for yours. If you have located coupons that you need, you may also immediately make an offer to trade for them. If you find a coupon you badly need, you could offer several coupons for just one.

* Do not post the same offers on several trading forums simultaneously.

* Reply immediately (within 24 hours) to any response you receive even if you are rejecting the trade offer.

* Once you have agreed to a trade, mail out your coupon promptly. Delays will affect the coupon’s with expiration date.

* Check online coupon trading forums regularly for the best chances of getting what you are looking for. Sometimes, people post notices of special sales and deals at online stores.

* Learn to recognize popular coupons. Items like baby formula are costly, and coupons for baby food are highly sought after by coupon traders. Even if you have no children, these are valuable coupons for trading. Grocery store coupons are also extremely popular.

The principal benefit of coupon trading (online and off) is that it allows you to collect multiples of the coupons you need (16 coupons for your favorite cereal, for example). As you get more accustomed to the process of Internet coupon trade, you can join several forums or trading groups, thereby enhancing your chances of obtaining coupons you need.

By combining coupon trading and other shopping strategies, you can cut down drastically on your spending. Many stores allow the use of a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon on the same item, for example. Another strategy is to watch for sales, match the coupons you have to the sales and then start trading for coupons that you need. To obtain maximum savings out of coupon trading and shopping strategies, however, you may have to abandon some of your brand (and store) preferences.

How much you spend is one of the few things you can still control in today’s unpredictable economy and, contrary to what you may think, reducing spending on grocery and household products does not have to affect your standard of living.

Food spending is often the last item of its budget that a family decides to limit. Somehow, we feel that being frugal when it comes to buying food is a sign of abject poverty. Many families decide to curb spending in other areas (clothing, vacations and even education) before they finally make a serious effort to save on grocery bills.

Household items like cleaning supplies, pet care, baby care and healthcare products (toothpaste, shampoo, Kleenex, makeup etc) are another area where you can make huge savings. This article will show you some ways that you can cut back on spending in these two areas – without affecting your lifestyle.

* Generic versus Brand Name Products: You can save considerably on household supplies and food products by buying generic or store-label goods. Take the time to compare the unit price, ingredients and nutritional information of generic products with those of brand names. The same companies often make both the brand-name products and the generic and store-label goods. The company that makes Bird’s Eye frozen vegetables also produces store-label frozen vegetables – at a fraction of the price.

* Keep Track of Grocery Store Sale Cycles: This needs a little practice, and it is easier to do if you write down prices for the first few weeks. The point is to recognize the rock-bottom prices for most items, so that you can wait and not buy an item the first time it is on sale. For example, seasonal items are on sale more frequently than cereals, soft drinks and other popular goods. Also, as their ‘sell-by’ dates approach, food products (dairy, baked goods, meat) are regularly discounted by at least 50%. Sell-by dates are not the same as expiration dates and purchasing these products does not mean that you are obliged to use them immediately.

* Drop into discount grocers and join warehouse clubs: Discount grocers like Save-A-Lot sell mostly store-label products and the great value on pantry staples you get at warehouse clubs makes the membership fee worthwhile.

* Coupons: By using free grocery coupons in combination with the above methods, you can, at least, double your savings. To get the most out of your grocery coupons, you have to approach couponing in an organized manner.

- Coupons are definitely making a comeback. Many more options are available for accessing grocery coupons today, including online coupons and services that let you load coupons to your cell phones or unto your store shopping card. You can also print coupons at coupon kiosks inside stores. If you shop at Marsh Supermarkets and Giant Eagle stores, you can swipe your shopping card at an in-store kiosk to get coupons based on how much business you provide and current store offers.

- Types of free grocery coupons include: Manufacturer’s Coupons (distributed by manufacturers to promote their products), Store-Specific Coupons (valid at specific grocery stores), Combination Coupons (valid only for the purchase of multiple items from a list of products), Rebate Coupons (to redeem these, you need to mail them in with a proof of purchase and receipt).

- In addition to weekly papers and in-store offerings, you can get online printable grocery coupons at store and company websites, as well as by registering at specialized websites listing hundreds of free printable coupons.

- A few pointers you should be aware of in order to use coupons to the best advantage: always try to combine sales with coupons; do not use a coupon if it does not provide the most savings. For example, figure out whether it is more advantageous to use a coupon for a brand-name item or to buy the store-label or generic equivalent (use your calculator if you have to).

- Use coupons that are discounted with your shopper’s card. Use your coupon in combination with ‘2-for’ sales and shop on double coupon days when stores, essentially, give you duplicate free coupons.

- Check your store’s coupons policies before you start shopping. Either stop at the customer service counter, or call the store. Most stores accept Internet coupons, though some still do not. Ask whether the store will double the coupon even it exceeds the face value of the item.

By getting organized, educating yourself about grocery coupons and using them in combination with rebates, store sales, discount grocers and the other methods explained above, you will definitely cut down on your grocery and household supply bills.

I have always had an aversion to clipping coupons for groceries. I even used to scan the check out lines, trying to avoid joining check out lines where little old ladies stood ready and attentive, coupons in hand.

That was then. Now, I myself am one of these coupon-clutching women. Although, I don’t think of myself as a ‘little old lady’. I believe that I am a smart shopper who has finally learnt, albeit under duress, the value of coupons, rebates and refunds. This is my story.

About a year ago, I was complaining to a friend of my mother’s about the rising cost of groceries. She leaned forward in her chair, smiled and said, “I have the answer to your problem.” I sighed inwardly, fully expecting another coupon lecture and told her, “I hate the idea of coupons and all the work that using grocery coupons involves.” My mother’s friend was surprised. “Who said anything about coupons?” she asked.

For the next 45 minutes, I listened to this person’s non-coupon grocery saving strategies. To save on eggs, she told me, all I had to do was to substitute three tablespoons of mayonnaise for each egg when baking a cake. She also advised me to buy a large quantity of eggs, on sale, and then try to freeze them. She assured me that frozen milk was ok. It did become watery and separate, but all one had to do was to give it a shake or two and it would combine again. Only very picky people would notice the slight difference in taste, she added.

She looked across the room, nodding in the direction of my daughter Maggie who was sound asleep in her crib, and said, “Now, that’s where you can save big money.” Baby food in jars is extremely expensive. My mother’s friend urged me to purchase fresh vegetables and fruit to clean, peel, prepare, steam and freeze.

By the time she had gotten around to explaining the wonderful savings I could make using cloth diapers instead of disposable ones and substituting cotton wash cloths for baby wipes, I was impatiently eyeing the Sunday paper on my coffee table.

I knew I had seen a coupon for my favorite diaper brand in there that morning. There was also a piece about which online coupon websites were most popular. I had a lot to do before Maggie woke up. I planned to have enough coupons ready and organized to make a trip to the store. I was not about to feed my family frozen eggs.

Historically, there has always been a strong link between the state of the economy, price comparison shopping and the rate of coupon redemption. As unemployment rates and prices rise, coupon redemption rates do too.

The key component of using coupons to maximum advantage is flexibility, careful use – and awareness. The coupon trends and statistics presented below will increase your knowledge about coupons and help you to use this saving strategy effectively.

* Although three billion coupons were redeemed in 2006 (representing $2.6 billion in customer savings), about 99% of all coupons issued were not redeemed. In fact, overall coupon distribution declined by 12% that year, and the coupon redemption rate dropped by 13%.

* $2.8 billion worth of coupons were redeemed in 2007 – the first time since 1992 that coupon redemption volume did not decline.

* An Internet survey conducted by Promotion Marketing Association’s (PMA) Coupon Council in September, 2008 shows that 89 % of the overall population use coupons when shopping at supermarkets, and coupon users surveyed reported average savings on grocery bills amounting to 7%.

* According to the survey mentioned, a typical family saves between $5.20 and $9.60 / week using coupons (customers who devote 20 minutes a week collecting and organizing coupons reportedly are able to save up to $1,000 / year, and the average weekly savings on groceries of the 46% who spend less than ten minutes / week on couponing activities are $7.00).

* PROMO Magazine reported that CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) manufacturers issued over $302 billion worth of coupons in 2007. This represents a 6% increase over 2006 (16 billion additional coupons).

* PROMO Magazine also reported that, according to NCH Marketing, Free-standing inserts in newspapers still represent the vast majority of distributed coupons (88%), followed by handouts (5%), direct mail (2%), magazines (2%), newspapers (1%), in/on-pack (1%) and the Internet (0.4%).

* Nevertheless, there is no doubt that online coupons are gaining popularity. While some estimates indicate an increase of 6% between October 2006 and October 2007, other sources such as comScore, Inc., claim that Internet coupon usage grew by 33% between 2006 and 2007.

* In 2008, visits to coupon websites over the holidays (Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday) were between 15% and 17% higher than in 2007.

* Approximately 20% of US Internet users have downloaded online coupons, and over 40% of those coupons were redeemed.

* Online internet users tend to redeem coupons at offline stores. Cyber Dialogue (an online market research company) indicates that 48% of the shoppers who used online coupons redeemed them at offline stores as opposed 24% who used online promo codes to shop online.

* Surprisingly, a survey by PriceRunner.com shows that U.S. consumers with higher incomes are more likely to use online coupons. The survey of 1000 customers with Internet access shows that 58% of lower income households (below $35,000 / year) had used an online coupon at least once in the past six months, compared to 74 % of households with incomes between $35,000 and $74,000 and 84% of households with incomes of $75,000 or above.

* Most popular online coupon product categories in December 2008 were department store coupons, followed by computer, appliances and electronics. Sixty-nine percent of online coupon searches included specific name brands (JCPenney, Target or Pizza hut, for example), and 31% were generic coupon searches (grocery coupons, online coupons, and free printable coupons).

* According to online coupon aggregator Tjoos.com, coupon use was up in 2008, but average order sizes dropped by 30 % between August 2008 and October 2008.

* Tjoos.com also reported a 31 % increase in emails containing coupons sent by retailers during the same period.

* Finally, coupon users (online and off-line) remain largely female (CyberDialogue says 58% of online coupon users are women and off-line industry estimates indicate that 57% of in-store coupon users are female).

The above shows that there will be a growing trend among manufacturers and retailers to issue more online coupons. This is a natural response to the reported increase in consumer use of the Internet to obtain coupons and the continued decline of print newspaper readership.

The fact that coupon use, traditionally attributed to low income households, is more prevalent among the more affluent is an added enticement to manufacturers and retailers, but it also means that there could be more coupon promotions on expensive articles and name brands.

The information above can help consumers to use coupons wisely. Do not let the expected increase in promotions and coupons entice you into buying items you would not have bought otherwise. Avoid the temptation to buy more than you need or to purchase expensive products simply because you have a coupon that is ‘saving’ you money.

A coupon train refers to a group of people involved in trading coupons. The word ‘train’ is derived from the system used to trade coupons. One person (the leader or ‘train conductor’) starts the train by collecting coupons that she (or, sometimes, he) does not need and will not be using. This person then puts all the coupons in an envelope and mails it to another coupon collector who opens the envelope, picks out the coupons she needs, replaces them with other coupons of equal value, and mails the envelop to the third coupon collector. The process is repeated and, after the envelope makes the round of all the coupon train members, it is mailed back to the leader.

For the system to work, there has to be a list of names and addresses of people who have joined the coupon train. Coupon trains are formed online. You can find several coupon sharing groups at Yahoo Groups. Coupon websites such as www.MadAboutSavings.com or www.afullcup.com also have coupon train forums you can join. The advantage of coupon train forums on coupon websites is that you can post and collect coupons on the same sites. Becoming a member of these sites is free and requires only that you provide a valid email address.

You can also start a coupon train yourself. Join a coupon forum and post an announcement stating that you are starting a coupon train and need ‘riders’. Other members of the forum who are interested will PM you their names and address. You, the train leader, then have to type up this information and mail the list of names along with your unwanted coupons to the first ‘rider’ on the train (the first name on the list).

Coupon trains are often ‘coupon-specific,’ meaning that their members are all interested in a certain coupon category. For example, some coupon trains only deal with coupons of a certain value, others only trade in online printable coupons, and there are grocery coupon only trains, pet coupon only, baby coupon only trains etc. Many coupon trains allow riders to create a “wish list” to let other members know which coupons they are looking for.

Although every coupon train has its own regulations (and you should take the time to read them before joining the group), all good coupon trains observe a few basic rules:

* Not to use coupons approaching their expiration date

* Members are only allowed to include a limited number of duplicate coupons in the coupon envelop, or train

* Speedy posting to the next person

The benefits and drawbacks of coupon trains listed below should help you decide whether coupon trains are for you.

Benefits:

* Access to a much wider coupon selection than if you were collecting coupons on your own

* Money savings: coupons are all about saving money, and trading coupons is one way of doing so. Instead of discarding coupons that are useless to you, you can use them to obtain coupons you do need.

* Pleasurable thrill: there is nothing quite as exciting as receiving an envelope full of potentially money saving coupons. It is the next best thing to receiving an envelope full of money.

Drawbacks:

* Expiration dates: some people, knowingly or unknowingly, give you expired coupons, or coupons that are about to expire. In the case of coupon trains, it is important to make allowances for postal delays.

* Coupon trains are usually time-consuming. Members have to sort the coupons they have and decide which ones they do not need, and they must be prompt about mailing the coupon envelope within the designated timeframe.

* Broken coupon trains: a coupon train member who decides to stop trading coupons may simply not forward the envelope to the next member on the list.

* Useless coupons: you may receive a large number of coupons that are useless to you. If, out of the 50 coupons you receive, you can only use two or three, the coupon train may not be worth your time or effort – but you are still responsible for forwarding the envelope to the coupon collector who is next on the list.

Judging by the popularity of coupon trains, however, the majority of riders appear to be honest people who are profiting by this coupon trading method.

I am in my mid thirties, married to a self-employed electrician and mother to two little boys (nine and six years old). I am also a secretary to the principal at a private school about 40 miles away from my home. Five days a week, I have to be out of the house and in the car an hour before my children are ready to leave for school. With Gary (my husband) working longer hours, we are probably going to have to give our sons keys to the house since neither of us will be back when they get home from school. I have huge misgivings about that. I have imagined all kinds of hair-raising scenarios about what could go wrong for the 90 minutes they will be alone in the house.

Like millions of people, I do not enjoy my job. In the mornings, I always worry about traffic, the car stalling and making it to work on time. At the end of the day, I drive home as fast as I safely can. In between, I am as bored as a board.

Three weeks ago, I woke up with new resolve. As I drove to work, a little slower than usual, my crazy idea was taking hold of me. I sat at my desk, waiting. When the principal arrived, I let him walk into his office, gave him a minute to take off his coat, and walked in after him. I asked for three weeks of unpaid leave. I believe I would have quit if he had not agreed, but he did.

At dinner, I tried to sound confident as I told Gary not to worry, that I had a plan. As soon as the dishes were done, I sat down at the family computer. I had heard so much about online coupons and that night I learnt so much more.

The next morning, I put my boys on the school bus, went back into the house and started to work. Online grocery coupons, online coupon trading, determination and a great deal of organization and planning did pay off. Our grocery bill that first week was about the same as it always had been – but I was able to buy so much more of everything.

For my second week without work, I managed to cut our grocery spending by about 25%, just by using the coupons I had found online. My family was eating the same food, and I was also slowly stocking up on coffee and detergent (both on sale that week). I bought large quantities of those two items, paying very little, because I had planned for the sale. I had joined an online coupon trading group where people were happy to trade coffee and detergent coupons for the baby formula and diaper coupons I didn’t need.

The week after that, I almost doubled the savings. I gave the boys their breakfast cereal in bowls instead of bringing the box to the table. I had printed an online coupon for the store label cereal and used it. The children did not notice it wasn’t their brand name favorite. They gobbled it all up. We paid 45% less for grocery and household supplies that week – and I knew I could do better, over time.

Towards the end of the three weeks, I called the school and said I would need another week off. I have no idea why, but they agreed. You see, to get the most out of this ‘couponing career’, you need to have more time than money. That’s the situation I had put myself in, and I was doing very well.

After the boys and Gary left the house, I took a cup of coffee and a pile of magazines (to check for coupons before they expired) to bed and started planning my day. I would spend another hour or so ‘working’ in bed. Then I would go down to the computer in the living room, look for and print one or two online grocery coupons that I needed and check the coupon trading forums I had joined.

After lunch, I planned to visit three stores and my usual supermarket. Two of the stores had sales – an excellent deal on Gary’s favorite soda drink, and a rock bottom price sale on canned tomato sauce, both non-perishables that I would buy in quantity. I had collected several online coupons that were only valid at the third store, and was going to use them to buy my favorite shampoo, paper towels and dog food. At the supermarket, I planned to buy more store brand breakfast cereal and frozen vegetables.

I smiled to myself. I could drive to all the stores in town and I would still be spending less on gas than I used to when I drove to and from work every day. My couponing career was only starting. Tonight, I would explain to Gary that by working part time instead of full time, I could make more money. If he asks me to, I will even promise not to get addicted to couponing!

With more and more people shopping online, manufacturers and online retailer websites are increasingly issuing Internet coupons, known as “coupon codes”, “promotion codes” or “discount codes” used by customers to obtain discounts and other savings (such as free shipping) on online purchases.

Nearly all online stores provide various kinds of discount coupon codes. Like all coupons, these have are valid for a given time period. Online retailers also issue free shipping coupons or coupons that allow you to deduct a percentage off the shipping costs. Often, promotion codes offer online shoppers considerable deductions on total order price (as much as 20% to 50% off), especially for repeat customers.

Using these Internet coupons is very simple. Once you have found the promotion code you need, make a note of it. Proceed with your shopping normally, placing your purchases in your virtual shopping cart. You will not see the discount at this stage, and the items will appear to be at full price. This is because you have not entered your coupon code yet.

At the end of your online shopping spree, when you reach the checkout page, you will see a box that asks for a discount code or a promotional code. Enter the coupon code you have made a note of, and your price discount or free shipping will come into effect. Check your order total to make sure the coupon code is working. At this stage, you will see the total amount of your bill. Delete any items or modify quantities before you click the final ‘submit order’ button. There are certain benefits to online shopping:

* Convenience: you shop from home, anytime of the day, any day of the week, which saves time, effort and gas money. You will have to wait for your order to be shipped to you, however.

* The variety of Internet coupons available today not only allow you to save money, they have an important advantage over traditional paper coupons and online printable coupons – they can’t be damaged or destroyed.

* Internet coupons are generally valid for a longer time period than coupons that are redeemed in-store (sometimes for as long as three months).

* Almost all online retailers will offer additional savings and discounts to a repeat customer – sometimes all it takes is two visits to qualify as a repeat customer.

* Shopping online is ideal for finding an unusual purchase that is not readily available at all stores (a particular brand that your local supermarket no longer sells or a discontinued item). You can quickly look for what you need on retailers’ websites or on specialized deal finding sites like froogle.com that will direct you to wherever the item is sold on the Internet. In many cases, you will also find a coupon code for the item.

* Keep in mind that coupon codes are not always displayed on e-stores’ websites. One of the benefits of shopping online is that you can visit a number of websites (Couponwinner.com, for example) that provide a database of Internet coupons (promotion codes) and shopping deals that are redeemable at many online stores. Such sites also list links to Internet coupons.

* Insofar as savings are concerned, shopping online, very simply, keeps you out of the store – and out the way of temptation.

There are a few guidelines that everyone should follow when using Internet coupons to shop online:

* Do not pay for promotion codes (Internet coupons), which are available free of charge either at e-commerce websites or at any of the many discount websites that compile Internet coupons.

* Be suspicious if you come across an Internet coupon with an unbelievably profitable discount or offer, particularly if you do not recognize the website offering the coupon. Too good to be true is usually just that – not true. At best, you may be buying shoddy, used or stolen merchandise.

* Make sure that you have access to up-to-date information about any coupon code you use, and be wary of sites that display expired Internet coupons.

From the shoppers’ point of view, coupon websites are the easiest way to access online coupons. The better coupon websites present a vast collection of online coupons, allowing shoppers to access multiple product coupons at one website without spending hours searching on the Internet.

The recent increase in the popularity of online coupons is also partly due to the fact that they are cheaper for the businesses that issue them because no printing or postal costs are involved. Online discount coupons are also an excellent way to promote businesses, products and stores. Smaller local businesses and retailers who do not have websites online can still distribute discount coupons on the Internet through the many specialized websites offering online coupon listing facilities, thereby obtaining valuable worldwide exposure.

Reputable coupon websites provide an important and time saving service. They regularly up-date the coupons they post, making sure that they are current. Coupon websites also present coupons in an organized manner, categorizing them by product, manufacturer, store, or geographical location.

Online coupons are available for a wide range of products, from food, clothing and health and beauty products to travel and automotive items. Since all coupon websites collect their coupon postings from the same sources (manufacturers and retailers), their offerings are often very similar. Below are some tips that you may find useful in evaluating various coupon websites.

Advantages provided by better coupon websites:

* Most online coupon websites are free to use. You will be asked to register free of charge.

* Coupons are listed under specific categories (grocery, travel, health and beauty, automotive …) making your search for specific product or store coupons quick and easy.

* Many coupon websites provide additional savings features such as free samples and reward programs.

* Occasionally, a coupon website may even offer sneak previews on some advertizing campaigns and discounts.

* Some of the specialized coupon websites have a feature that allows you to set up alerts, which will inform you when the particular online coupons you need are available.

* Most websites have a feature that allows users to see the coupons that are currently available in their area, after entering their zip code

* Several coupon websites that provide online coupon directories also act as online social networks that bring together coupon users.

* Some online coupon websites list links to other coupon websites.

* The best coupon websites have databases that track the sales history of grocery products in individual stores, letting members know when products are at their lowest price – the ideal time to use a coupon.

Disadvantages:

* Signing up for a membership (registering) on a coupon website requires an e-mail address. While this allows the website to send you coupons and offers, your email account is very likely be used for unwanted offers and spam mail. It is best to create a separate email account when registering for coupon sites.

* Some coupon website may only list area specific coupons that can only be redeemed in one location or region.

* The excessive amount of adverts and graphics displayed on coupon websites is annoying and often slows down navigation.

* Websites that offer printable online coupons (particularly grocery coupon websites) will require that you download a small piece of software so that the security barcodes on the coupons will scan at the cash register. While this may cause users to hesitate, it is generally quite safe.

Online coupon websites are an especially valuable resource for grocery coupons because they help shoppers access the huge variety of coupons available. Unlike traditional coupon clipping from weekly papers, using the advanced search option available on better coupon websites allows you to locate and pick out only the coupons that you need.

Spending long hours on the Internet searching for printable grocery coupons that you can use and attempting to match them to store sales will certainly help you save on your bills. Taking out a membership in one or two coupon websites that feature the advantages listed above will not only save you time, it will supplement your savings considerably.

Coupon use in the US reached its peak in the early 1990s and then began to decline. With the present economic downturn, people are increasingly re-discovering the benefits of coupons for saving on regular expenses such as weekly grocery bills, and 2007 was the first year that did not register a decline in coupon use. Unfortunately, the renewed interest in online coupons could result in a resurgence of Internet coupon fraud.

Graphics software programs, home scanners and printers make it easy to create fake printable online coupons. Counterfeit online coupon problems began in 2003 and resulted in huge losses for stores, and by 2004, many retailers had stopped accepting printable online coupons and several food companies and retailers completely halted Internet based coupon distribution.

Manufacturers and retailers recognize the benefits of online coupons. The Internet is an excellent medium for targeting consumers looking for specific coupons because, unlike traditional paper coupons, shoppers search for and request online coupons that they need and will redeem.

The industry has therefore tried to implement solutions to the problem of online coupon fraud. Most legitimate online coupons now contain the following information: scannable bar codes, expiration dates and legitimate manufacturers’ addresses.

Coupon fraud does not only hurt retailers and manufacturers. It also hurts honest coupon users who unwittingly obtain fake coupons or whose valid coupons are rejected by suspicious store managers. Scam artists don’t just make personal use of fake coupons. They use them on coupon trading websites and Internet auction sites too, so you need to be able to distinguish between fake and legitimate online coupons. Below are a few pointers to help you do so.

* If you are not sure of the Internet source from which you have obtained your coupon, visit the Coupon Information Corporation’s website at http://www.cents-off.com/. You will find a display of counterfeit online coupons identified on the Internet. You can also visit Ripoff Report.com and look up paid coupon websites to check for any reported fraudulent coupon activity.

* If you suspect that a coupon is a fake, try to check the bar code at the bottom of coupon to determine if it is a copy or if it has been changed. Some perfectly valid coupons have blurry-looking barcodes and the barcodes on duplicate coupons often look exactly like those on valid coupons, so knowing something about how to read barcodes can enhance your chances of spotting fake coupons. Coupon barcodes consist of twelve digits. The first digit is the coupon number. The following five digits are the manufacturer’s number, and the next three digits are family codes assigned to products by the manufacturer. The 10th and 11th digits represent the value of the coupon (value code) and the final digit is known as a check digit (it tells the cashier how to process the coupon). After making sure that the bar code has 12 digits, you need to check the value code (10th and 11th digits) against the discount announced on the face of the coupon (a 75 cents off coupon should have 75 as the 10th and 11th digits).

* Check the validity of coupons contained in PDF files or coupons that are scanned and posted to websites. One way to do this is to check the manufacturer’s website. If the online coupon is valid, you should find it on the website.

* Take the time to find out which websites are reputable and avoid coupon promotion websites are not. In addition to store and manufacturers’ websites, a couple of reputable online printable coupon websites are SmartSource.com and Wow-Coupons.com.

* Generally, you should take extra care when paying for online coupons. Only buy coupons from legitimate sources and examine your purchase as closely as possible.

* Be vigilant when you come across coupons that appear too good to be true (free item coupons and unreasonably high discount value coupons). They are often fakes. Low value coupons that can be doubled at stores are often duplicated too.

* Finally, if you are concerned about a coupon, do not hesitate to contact the manufacturer in question.

With a little planning and some knowledge, you can make great savings using online coupons. Be meticulously honest and make sure to follow all the guidelines listed on a coupon when redeeming it. Be patient and remember that cashiers are forced to scrutinize coupons so carefully because of coupon fraud.

Internet coupons have multiplied coupon exposure rates enormously, providing access to more coupons for more stores and more products than ever before. In some ways, this is like bringing casino tables into the living room of a gambling addict. For many people, especially women, saving money can be so exhilarating, that it becomes an end in itself. Online coupon websites with names such as Coupon Addiction.com and Eve’s Addiction.com demonstrate that marketing professionals are well aware of this phenomenon.

Coupon-crazed shoppers present two main concerns. The first concern is that they may actually spend more money than they would have had they not used coupons at all. The second concern is that avid bargain hunters can unintentionally create strife, or at least tension, within the family.

Exaggerated obsession about landing a good deal leads shoppers to buy quantities of items they do not need at stores they do not usually frequent. Purchasing a product just because you have a 50% off coupon for it is not saving money – particularly when it will not be used. Driving miles away to a store because you have a coupon you can redeem there may cost more in gas money than the amount saved on the purchase. In both cases, you have spent money you would not have spent had you never obtained the coupons!

Following the tips below should curb the coupon craze of anyone who feels that their craving for coupons is out of control.

* For printable online coupons, remember to factor in the cost of your printer ink. Print only those coupons you know you will use. Consider not only the product or store, but also the expiry date of the coupon. If you know you will not be shopping before the expiry date, do not print the coupon.

* Planning is very important, especially when using grocery coupons to lower your food bills. Plan meals and make a grocery list before you shop. Once you have a list of your actual needs, search for suitable online coupons. Conversely, you could plan meals according to the product and / or store coupons you have already obtained. This allows you to use your coupons before they expire.

* Make a list / inventory of items and products stored in your pantry, cupboards or closets. Coupon addicts typically store huge quantities of merchandise bought only because they were good deals. Be brutally honest and write everything down – then start using it. Do not allow yourself to use any new coupons on these items until you have used your stock.

* Implicit in the preceding point is that you must train yourself to pass up bargain opportunities for products you do not need. This is extremely difficult for people with a pronounced couponing craze. It involves honestly deciding whether you need a product and if you are likely to use it in the near future (especially for perishable food or health items). For non-perishables, you must consider whether you have room to store your great finds.

* Those of you who lack the willpower to apply the above recommendations have two more options. The first allows you to satisfy your addiction by proxy. Introduce a friend to the wonders of online coupons, and help her to save on her bills. The thrill should be almost the same, but you will not be spending your money on things you do not need. The second option will not limit your spending, but it will give it new purpose. Simply donate all your excess household supplies or food items to a good cause.

The time-consuming nature of online couponing is behind the second issue that may be a concern for coupon-crazed shoppers – creating tension or discord within the family. Online couponing is a worthy and perfectly commendable pursuit. However, if you let yourself loose sight of the purpose of this activity, it can take over your life. You can access coupons on the Internet all day, everyday. In fact, new coupons are probably available online every hour!

Looking for, and obtaining, online coupons is something one does alone. This means taking time away from your family. In addition to the time spent locating online coupons and comparing offers, online coupon websites provide various attractive options that can take up more of your time (coupon trading, for example). Online coupon forums bring a host of new friends to chat with, and hours can fly away as you discuss deals, savings and coupons with other couponing addicts.

To avoid tension or discord, limit the time you spend locating, comparing, discussing or trading online coupons. Choose a time when other members of the family will not feel neglected. Do not let your family feel that your coupon obsession is directing their lives. You do not have to eat at a restaurant just because you can redeem a couple of coupons there, nor is your husband obliged to stop at every store for which you have redeemable coupons.

Coupon-crazed shoppers have often forgotten the real benefits of online coupons. Instead of contributing to household savings and being appreciated for it, they often overspend. Combined with the time spent online and away from other family members, this can easily create resentment and tension.

There are many reasons to shop online. It saves time and physical effort, makes comparison shopping much simpler, allows you to research different products at leisure before you buy, locating specific items is much easier online – and your purchases are delivered to your doorstep.

Online coupons are an aspect of online shopping that all online shoppers should know about. This article explains the basics about getting free online coupons and using them to the best advantage. Most online shoppers may have used the occasional Promo Code, but not all know how to actively search for and locate free coupons online.

There are two basic types of Internet coupons: printable coupons that resemble traditional paper coupons (you print them from your computer and redeem them in-store) and coupon codes (also known as promotion codes) that are used only for online shopping. Additionally, many specialized coupon websites will mail coupons to you. Some grocery store websites and discount websites even let you download coupons electronically directly to your grocery store shopping card.

Top places to look for online coupons:

* If you want to purchase a specific item from a particular manufacturer, the best way to locate online coupons is to visit the company’s website. Some manufacturers, Procter & Gamble for example, offer printable coupons, which you can redeem in-store and others will email coupons to you. Simply type the name of the product you need in your Google or Yahoo search bar.

* The second place to look for online coupons is retail store websites. Coupons found on these sites are especially useful if you are shopping online, but you can also find printable coupons. Major retailers such as Target, Walmart and Kohl’s have online coupons that you can use for household good purchases, for example.

* Store coupons, of course, offer discounts at specific stores. If you are looking for a product coupon (a discount on a particular product), enter specific search terms, in quotes, such as “online toilet paper coupons” in your search bar.

* Online coupon websites: to find these, use appropriate keywords in your search bar. By typing in “printable coupons free” or “free coupon deals” for example, you will get websites that offer all kinds of printable coupons, promo codes, and discounts. Visiting a legitimate coupon website is an excellent way to find and collect online coupons because these sites have extensive collections of different coupons and allow you to access multiple product coupons in one location. Deciding which of the many coupon websites to use depends largely on your personal taste, but it is always helpful to consider the following:

- Whether the site has a good assortment of coupons from merchants that you like

- Whether the website keeps coupons up-to-date and well-organized

- Whether the website ensures that the coupons offered adhere to security guidelines

- The kind of personal information you are required to provide

* You can also locate excellent coupon deals by visiting coupon savers’ forums, newsgroups and internet communities. Websites like couponforum.com and others let you share coupons with others on the Internet and exchange information on specific discounts or online coupons.

Whether you shop online or offline, the Internet is an excellent source for coupons, and you will quickly learn where to access the coupons that will provide you with the best savings. Below are a few tips on how to make best use of online coupons:

* If you expect to receive coupons in your inbox, make sure to create a separate email address account for this purpose.

* Check the zip codes on printable coupons to make sure you can use them your area

* Pay attention to online coupon expiration dates

* Always use reputable online coupon websites and, once you have found coupon website(s) you like, bookmark them for easy access

* Carefully read the coupon terms and conditions

* When using printable coupons, try to take the entire sheet of printed paper to the store so that store personnel can see the coupon website name

* For maximum savings, look out for coupons that allow multiple discount codes and promotions and remember to pair coupons with sale prices.

Today, clipping coupons and driving to the store to redeem them is no longer your only option. The use of online coupons, first circulated in the late 1990s, is becoming more and more prevalent. Everyone knows that coupons are a promotional tool used by retailers and product manufacturers to increase sales and promote products. There are many different types of coupons: discounts, free shipping, first-time customer coupons, and giveaways.

To make the best out of online coupon use, you should be able to decipher the meaning of the more common coupon terms and abbreviations found on online coupon and code lists. The list below is intended to serve as a useful guide to help you understand and recognize the abbreviations and acronyms you are most likely to come across when using online coupons.

* Addy: address (can refer to your e-mail address, home address, or the “url” of a web page or website)

* B1G1F: buy one item and get another one item free

* Barcode: is a computer coding system that uses a pattern of lines, spaces and bars to identify specific products. Used to determine product price and product information and to expedite customer check out, it can also be used as a “proof of purchase” when redeeming a coupon

* CO or c/o: a “cash off” or “cents off” coupon

* Coupon Code: special code that customers type into a specified field during the checkout process so that the online coupon discount can be processed; coupon codes often include expiry dates.

* CPN: Coupon

* FORM: document to be completed for using a coupon (may be in stores, on customer receipts, in newspapers or magazines or online)

* Money Plus: offers that call for money in addition to postage and handling costs

* NAZ: name, address and zip code

* NB: national brand products (as opposed to generic or store brand products)

* NED: no expiration date; the coupon or rebate offer may be used indefinitely

* OAS: Any one size, meaning that the coupon can be used on any size of the product offered

* PK: pack (pack of chewing gum, for example)

* PP: purchase price

* Premium: an item received from a refund offer

* UNL: unlimited; (means you can redeem an unlimited number of coupons on a particular item)

Online coupons exist for all kinds of products, including the third highest expense in most household budgets – grocery items. Grocery coupons have always offered a great potential for savings. Today, the Internet provides various sources (manufacturers’ websites, grocery store websites, forums and newsgroups specialized in grocery coupons and online coupon directories) where you can easily obtain coupons for the specific grocery products you need. Most of these coupons are free. You do not have to buy a newspaper.

Many people mistakenly believe that online coupons can only be redeemed on the Internet, but the truth is that some online coupons are printable and intended for use in stores while others (coupon codes, promotion codes, discount codes, key codes …) are intended for online shopping.

With minimal computer knowledge, you can easily find, compare and select online coupons for food items, baby care products, household supplies and other grocery products. By using these wisely, you can certainly make significant savings on your grocery bills.

Food coupons have become the grocery shopper’s latest BFF, for obvious reasons. When the cost of a loaf of bread goes up 10% from last week’s shopping trip, you know you’ve got to do something if you want to keep eating nutritiously without hauling out a credit card at the check stand. Both transportation costs, getting the food to your market, and the wholesale price of the food itself, contribute to the situation. Nonetheless, you’re still stuck for a solution. One way to

Why is personal information need to obtain printable grocery coupons?
Every website I go on wants name, address, etc in order to allow you to print grocery coupons. Why is this necessary? What has my name address and birthdate, etc. have to do with coupons?…

trim your costs is with a rigorous food coupon program.

You can find coupons in the newspaper flyers, in the grocery store, online and in local coupon exchange programs. Your neighbor tosses a few she got in the mail, but won’t be using, into the box, making them available to someone else who needs them. It works like a rotating, open bank of money-saving food coupons. While there are plenty of food coupons to be had, you have to use them strategically to realize the best value.

Grocers may put manufacturer’s coupons in their ads and then label them ‘redeemable only at Superior Grocery stores’. The fact is, that a manufacturer’s coupon is just that – issued by the manufacturer, not the store. If you haven’t noticed, grocers are becoming quite competitive these days. They’re trying to stay in business and the giant discount grocery may be threatening the smaller grocer’s loyal customer following. So, although they

want you to believe that coupon cannot be redeemed elsewhere, it’s simply not true. Most stores accept other store’s coupons, in order to get your business.

If a grocer is out of an advertised sale item for which you have a coupon, ask for a rain check, which allows you to buy the product when it’s back in stock, even after the sale is over.

You want to be careful when you use manufacturer’s coupons, because you might be paying more for the name brand than the store brand, even after redeeming the food coupon. Unless you consider the name brand to be considerably superior and don’t want to buy any substitute, you’re often money ahead on the store brand. Hang on to the name brand coupon until the brand goes on sale – then use that manufacturer’s coupon.

Making effective use of coupons requires a system, such that you don’t end up wasting money because the coupon expired. Keeping a price book will help boost your savings, too. There are lots of free price books online, which are essentially spreadsheets that allow you to monitor local prices and sales cycles. You can print your price book contents and keep them in a

Find money saving offers and a weekly coupon newsletter.

small binder that you carry with you. Slip all your coupons into a pocket in the front of the binder.

Saving money on groceries has become imperative for most of us. Every little bit helps. Using food coupons is one strategy that gets you to your goal.

world. Because of these findings, coupons vary. With printable and free online food coupons, simply enter your state zip code to see the printable tickets for your place. It also gives an idea to the manufacturer about the products that you desire. With this, they can send you more coupons later on.

Strategy

The key to free online food coupons is to get organized, whether they are print-ready or not. Create an organization file where you can keep track for any change in the marketers program. Who knows, your one-single purchase worth of ticket today may be equivalent to double purchase tomorrow. This is their game. They are aware of it and so, you should be too.

How the game is played is equivalent to how the manufacturers are paid.

With skyrocketing prices at the grocery store and no end in sight, free grocery coupons, found in the newspaper, online and in our mailboxes, warrant our attention! Even if you’ve never used coupons before, start now, for the sake of your wallet. In a recent interview, a farm commodities expert remarked, “These are the good old days!

Do you use coupons at the grocery store?
How much is the most you've saved with them? What's the secrect to saving the most?…

Go out and buy a freezer, and stock up now. Prices are going to continue to rise.” So, here’s the skinny on making the most of those free grocery coupons.

Collecting and organizing grocery coupons takes little time and effort and pays you back handsomely at the checkout. By using coupons regularly, you can expect to save up to 20% on your food bill each week. Coupon organizers are inexpensive and come with dividers which you can label in any way you find convenient.

Your local newspaper is full of free grocery coupons. Pull out the grocery flyer inserts and put them in a safe place until you’re ready to make your list. Besides the specials, you’ll find valuable coupons.

Some stores print, ‘good only at the ABC store’ right below the manufacturer’s coupon imprint. That grocer wants you to buy at his store, but a manufacturer’s coupon is usually accepted at any store.

You can collect plenty of free grocery coupons online by visiting grocer’s websites. There are also websites which specialize in coupons. You can select coupons for products and brands you normally buy. Some allow you to print

from home, while others will mail them to you within a couple of days. There are also coupon clubs, where you receive regular mailings of the current crop of coupons.

Don’t neglect manufacturer’s websites. For example, you only use a certain cleaning product but never seem to find a coupon. Chances are good the manufacturer’s website will yield a coupon.

Instead of tossing those envelopes of coupons you previously regarded as junk mail, file them with the rest of your coupons until you’re ready to sort out the ones you’ll use.

However, don’t fall into the trap of buying a product just because you have a free grocery coupon. If you don’t use the item, don’t bother with the coupon. On the other hand, you may want to make use of a $2 coupon so you can try that pricey kitchen mop you’ve been wanting.

While you’re shopping, keep your eyes open for those coupon dispensers sticking out from the grocery shelves.

Build your menus around specials and coupon items. These free grocery coupons are worth real money!

will also need to see what the expiry date is as some of these grocery coupons have a limited sale time.

Virtually everyone is now looking to save some money when they shop. Even wealthy people report they actively look for ways to save and cut some of their expenses. Now here’s a startling statistic: food costs around the world have surged 75% since 2000! It’s no wonder that we’re all checking out all the ways to save. Coupons are one of the most popular techniques for today’s shopper. You find coupons in the newspaper, in your snail mail and even in the grocery stores. Some coupons are for store brands while others are called ‘name brand coupons’. So what’s the difference? In either case, you’re saving money, right? Not necessarily. Let’s see why.

Let’s take butter as an example. You’ve picked up a coupon for a nationally distributed brand

Free Grocery Coupons, Printable Coupons, Online Coupons, Food Coupons …
Printable Grocery Coupons, Online Coupons and Food Coupons!Pick and Print coupons for Brand Name Products, it is Fast, Easy, and Many are Free!

of butter. This name-brand butter ordinarily sells for $3.75 per pound. Your coupon entitles you to $0.50 off this price. You use the name brand coupon and go home with your pound of $3.25 after-coupon butter. Now, while you were shopping, did you comparison shop? How about the store brand butter which isn’t on sale, but is priced at $3.00 per pound. By using the name brand coupon, you actually lost $0.25!

Now, let’s look at the other side of this butter coin. It is a fact that some of the cheaper dairies produce butter that has a higher water content. Perhaps you’ll be money ahead to use the name brand coupon, perhaps not. The only way you’ll know is by using the butter. However, unless you’re an extreme gourmet, it’s unlikely that you can tell the difference, unless you buy the very pricey ‘European-style’ butter as your benchmark. In any case, you’re probably saving money on the store brand for normal cooking and eating needs.

Granted, you may have certain name brand items on your list which are truly superior to your taste. So if you have a coupon for that product, use it. You may pay a little more, but you’ll enjoy it more.

Free Grocery Coupons – Get $250 Dollars in free grocery coupons.
Free Grocery Gift Card worth $250. Grocery coupons for free. … Then redeem your free printable grocery coupons by complateting sponsored offers. …

Here’s the trick to using name brand coupons to your wallet’s best advantage. Let’s say you’ve got the name brand coupon for that expensive butter, which is not currently on sale. Check the coupon expiration date. It’s usually good for at least a few months. When you go shopping, comparison shop. Buy today’s best buy, which is probably the store brand. Hold on to the name brand coupon, until it goes on sale. That’s when you buy and really save.

Another tip for using name brand coupons: grocery stores have those little coupon dispensers, adjacent to the product location. When you see coupons for an item you regularly buy, pick up several. Consumers believe they are only allowed to take one for each product. Not true. Note

where is the best online site to find grocery store coupons?
i would like to find a good place to print coupons from…

the expiration and squirrel them away in your coupon organizer. When the product goes on sale, out come the coupons and big savings at the check stand!

entirely too embarrassed to actually use it. Who cares if they can get a free meal or a huge discount, they conveniently lose the coupon before it needs to be presented. I personally present and take advantage of as many coupons as I can each and every time.

Since I first started using the internet, I noticed that there are online coupons everywhere. If you want to take advantage of free meals, there are online coupons for that. If you want to save a few dollars on pet food or car rentals – you guessed it, there are online coupons that you can print out for that as well. A lot of websites only offer savings through use of an online coupon that you can only find on their site. I absolutely love that. Not only can you sometimes get a better deal online than in person, but online coupons can get you free shipping or additional savings. Free shipping is never a bad deal because paying for shipping can sometimes

Does annyone know which grocery stores accept online coupons? No one seems to take them.?
I printed out a buch of online manufacturer's grocery coupons from coolsavings.com and a few other sites, and every store I have tried in my area (MI) won't accept them. If stores won't take them, what good are they? Any Ideas?…

cost you more than the item you’re purchasing. Some companies will have an online coupon that you can print out and present in person. My husband’s company does exactly that and it’s a great concept because it helps them to know how many people are actually viewing their site. There are quite a few companies that do that just to help people get more familiar

with their business and what their products are.

Coupons can save people quite a bit of money. Or, they can be offering a small savings that when you add it up over time, really can turn out to be quite a large amount of money being saved. I have a tendency to shop at companies or on websites that offer online coupons or free shipping. A favorite clothing site of mine frequently offers a 15% online coupon that you have to print out and present in person at the store. If it were not for the frequent online coupons, I most likely would not be shopping in that store. What’s even better is that the coupon can be used for items that are already on sale. That’s an opportunity this is simply too good to pass up. However, I’d most likely be walking right past that particular store had

find them. Even better, there are groups that formed online just to share this type of information with anyone who is looking for it. You can save a lot of money on many things if you know where to look.

If you do a search for coupon codes, you can find a lot of them through the search. Though some are special offers through web sites, most of the time online communities will pop up. These are full of members that search out coupon codes and other discounts, and they then share them with the world, or at least the part of the world that bothers to look. These can be for food, special events, groceries, services and almost anything else that you can think to buy or want.

save money for a trip to Six Flags. We are going for a special event, but I don’t want to pay the high admission price. I guess I would not be alone in that wish.
the cost you were expecting to pay. I’m still looking for my Six Flags discount, but I’m not sure I am going to find anything useful. However, I may just run across some other great deals in the process, so the search will be worth it no matter what I find.
